THREE DIFFERENT IDEAS

Language is not the same as script.

Korean

한국어hangugeo

The language existed before Hangeul. Sejong created an alphabet, not the Korean language.

Hangeul

한글hangeul

A writing system with consonant and vowel letters arranged into syllable blocks.

Hanja

한자hanja

Chinese characters used in Korea. Earlier systems adapted them to represent Korean, including idu, hyangchal and gugyeol.

NOTICE THE SHAPES

Letters with a design logic.

Five basic consonants reflect speech organs; other letters build on them. These historical shapes are not a pronunciation chart.

Sky, earth and a person

SkyA round dot
EarthA horizontal line
A personAn upright line

Historical vowel shapes combine these three elements. The old dot is not one of today’s standard 21 vowel letters. Letter formation and modern pronunciation are different questions.

28, 24 OR 40?

The numbers count different things.

The original system had 28 letters: 17 consonants and 11 vowels. Modern charts show 24 basic letters. Including doubled and combined forms gives 40: 19 initial consonants and 21 vowels.

The modern vowel set includes ㅐ, ㅔ, ㅢ. Compound final consonants are listed separately.

ASK THE SOURCES

Clear questions, documented answers.

Was Hangeul created in China?

No. The records attribute its creation to King Sejong of Joseon. Earlier use of Chinese characters in Korea is a separate history; it does not make Hangeul a Chinese invention.

Does “40 letters” mean 40 distinct sounds?

No. These are letter forms. Pronunciation depends on position, neighbouring sounds and the speaker. Romanization is only a learning aid.
